German coach reiterates desire to end coaching career at the Catalan club

Hansi Flick has said he intends to extend his stay at Barcelona but says contract talks will wait until the club secures their 29th league title.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga fixture against Celta Vigo, the 61-year-old addressed his future for the first time since the team’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Atletico Madrid. Flick’s current deal runs until June 2027 and he has been the subject of speculation despite overseeing a highly successful spell since arriving in 2024.

Barcelona are top of La Liga by nine points with seven matches to play, as they push for a second consecutive league title under the German coach. Flick has already guided the club to a domestic treble in his first season and retained the Supercopa de España earlier this year.

“My plan is to renew,” Flick said. “I’m being completely honest. This will be the last step in my career. I feel great. I’d like to renew, but now is not the time to talk about it.

“I had a great time with the national team and with Bayern, but here I feel like everything around me is the best. Looking at it all, my career and my family, I’m very happy. The feeling is great: the atmosphere in the locker room is fantastic. The Champions League is a motivation. It’s the dream of the club and the fans. We have to stick together and try again and again, and hopefully it will come very soon.”

Flick also addressed the disappointment of the club’s European exit, describing it as a painful but necessary learning experience for a relatively young squad.

“Every season is a journey,” Flick said. “You can have a defeat like this. The team is young. The Champions League elimination was painful. But we have to do our best in the upcoming matches and also next season.

“This should motivate us. We have to improve. I’m proud of my team. Now we’re focused on La Liga. We have an advantage, but it’s not over yet. It won’t be easy. We want to play our best. We have to give it our all. Everyone is proud of the team because they gave everything. But it’s painful.”
