Erling Haaland says Norway’s memorable World Cup run has inspired a new generation after their quarter-final defeat to England.

Erling Haaland believes Norway’s remarkable World Cup campaign has put the nation firmly on the global football map, despite seeing their historic run come to an end with a 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the quarter-finals.

The Manchester City striker was kept off the scoresheet for the first time in 15 competitive appearances for Norway as Jude Bellingham’s brace sent England into the semi-finals.

Even so, Haaland finished the tournament with seven goals in five matches, having led his country to their first World Cup quarter-final in 28 years.

Norway’s run included a famous last-16 victory over Brazil, where Haaland scored twice to eliminate the five-time world champions. Reflecting on the journey, the 25-year-old said the greatest achievement was showing the world what Norwegian football is capable of.

Haaland expressed hope that the team’s success would inspire young footballers back home and help establish Norway as a regular contender at major tournaments.

He believes the current generation has laid the foundations for sustained success at future World Cups and European Championships.

The tournament has also elevated Haaland’s global profile, with the striker attracting widespread admiration from supporters across the United States for both his performances and personality. However, he insisted the focus remains on what the squad has achieved together rather than individual recognition.

Looking ahead, Haaland said the challenge for Norway is to build on their breakthrough and maintain the high standards they have set. He described the past six weeks as an unforgettable journey that had transformed both himself and Norwegian football.

Haaland also reserved special praise for England midfielder Jude Bellingham, his former Borussia Dortmund teammate. Calling him one of the best players in the world, the Norwegian admitted England are fortunate to have a midfielder capable of deciding matches with both his creativity and goalscoring ability.

The striker was eventually substituted during extra time after struggling with the intense Miami heat and a dead leg suffered in the second half.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken revealed Haaland had emptied the tank throughout the tournament, describing his seven-goal campaign as outstanding and insisting his talisman had given everything for his country.
