Greece held Germany to a goalless draw in Thessaloniki to remain level on points with group leaders the Netherlands, while Jurgen Klopp’s side were left three points off the pace.

Both teams had opportunities to settle a lively Nations League contest at Toumba Stadium but neither could find the finish required. Greece will take greater satisfaction from the result after taking four points from Germany in their two meetings.

Greece came closest to breaking the deadlock early on when Giorgos Masouras met a cross with a header, only for Jonas Urbig to produce an excellent save. Germany gradually took control of possession and began creating the clearer openings.

Florian Wirtz, captaining Germany on his 48th appearance, came close after working his way into a shooting position, although his effort took a deflection and went over. Derry Scherhant and David Raum also tested Konstantinos Tzolakis as Germany increased the pressure.

Germany appeared to have gone ahead in the 32nd minute when Jonathan Burkardt converted Scherhant’s cross. The goal was eventually disallowed following a lengthy VAR review, with Tom Bischof penalised for handball during the build-up.

Scherhant then went close before Burkardt missed another opportunity as Germany finished the first half strongly.

Greece responded after the interval. Kostas Tsimikas dragged a shot wide before Konstantinos Mavropanos forced another save from Urbig with a header.

Germany remained dangerous, with Malick Thiaw narrowly missing the target, while Greece coach Ivan Jovanovic was booked after an angry reaction on the touchline.

Masouras headed another chance wide with 14 minutes remaining, while Wirtz sent a shot from distance over the bar. Germany created the better openings in the closing stages but could not take advantage.
