Gatti Strikes Late to Rescue Juventus Against AC Milan

Federico Gatti struck deep into stoppage time to earn Juventus a 1-1 draw against AC Milan at the Allianz Stadium.

Both Juventus and AC Milan arrived in Turin with maximum points from their opening two matches, and the confidence was evident as the game began at a high tempo.

Juventus almost made the perfect start when 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic fired over the crossbar inside two minutes on his first start for the club. Nicolas Gonzalez then tested Mike Maignan with a powerful effort in the 12th minute, forcing the Milan goalkeeper into action.

The visitors’ goalkeeper was soon called upon again. Francisco Conceição cut inside before forcing Maignan into a diving save, while Manuel Locatelli could not make proper contact with the rebound.

Maignan continued to keep Milan alive as Juventus dominated the chances. Seven minutes before half-time, Conceição raced in behind the defence and unleashed a half-volley, but the Frenchman reacted quickly to parry the effort away.

AC Milan, meanwhile, struggled to threaten at the other end. Guglielmo Vicario was barely involved during the opening 45 minutes, with the Rossoneri failing to register a shot on target before the interval.

The pattern continued after the restart, although Conceição came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half when his powerful effort crashed against the base of the post.

Ruben Amorim responded by making three changes just after the hour mark, withdrawing summer signing Diego Moreira after an underwhelming debut. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Samuel Chukwueze and Alphadjo Cisse were introduced as Milan searched for a way into the contest.

The changes paid off almost immediately.

Cisse, who had already scored on his Serie A debut against Torino, struck again in Turin in the 68th minute. Chukwueze’s crossfield pass found the 19-year-old inside the penalty area, and Cisse calmly took control before drilling a low finish into the far corner.

The goal ended Milan’s six-game Serie A scoring drought against Juventus and continued Cisse’s remarkable start to life in the Italian top flight.

Juventus threw on Nick Woltemade for his debut as Luciano Spalletti looked for a response. The striker had an opportunity six minutes from time when the ball fell to him inside the box, but he could only blaze his effort over the bar.

Milan appeared destined to hold on for a first Serie A victory over Juventus since May 2023, but Gatti had other ideas.

The defender entered the game as a substitute and needed only four minutes to make his presence felt. In the second minute of stoppage time, he rose to meet Teun Koopmeiners’ superb cross and headed the ball beyond Maignan to send the Allianz Stadium into celebration.

It was Gatti’s second consecutive goal beyond the 90th minute, once again proving his value as a late-game difference-maker for Juventus.

The draw keeps Juventus unbeaten in their last seven Serie A meetings with Milan, while both sides remain unbeaten after the opening three rounds. For Milan, however, a first league win over their rivals in more than three years slipped away at the very last moment.
