Ferran Torres Sale May Cost Barcelona on the Pitch – but It Is at Least a Win on the Books

Barcelona have sold Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth about €50m.

It is a decision that may come back to haunt them as the club are currently without a recognised centre-forward. But as far as finances are concerned, the Spanish forward’s departure will at least give the club a significant boost.

Torres joined Barcelona from Manchester City in January 2022 for €55m on a five-year contract. Four years into that deal, only about €11m of the original fee remains on the club’s accounts when amortised (if the original fee is spread out across five years).

A sale for around €50m therefore allows Barcelona to record an accounting profit of roughly €39m. Torres’s substantial wages of about €10m per season will also be removed from the club’s books.

That is a huge gain for a club that has struggled over the last five years to operate within La Liga’s financial rules.

Of course, there is the caveat that Torres was a useful member of the squad, and even if he was not highly rated by manager Hansi Flick, his departure leaves Barcelona without an established senior striker.

They will very likely need to bring someone in. Since they are unlikely to land their prime target Julian Alvarez, the club will most likely settle for a less rated option, which will offset the gain made by selling Torres.

If no out-and-out striker is brought in, Barcelona could also face a difficult season, unless of course Flick is able to find suitable alternatives within the current squad.
