Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a muscular injury that could rule him out for up to five months.

The 30-year-old was forced off in the 14th minute of Madrid’s 2-0 La Liga win over Espanyol on Sunday after pulling up while sprinting. He left the pitch in visible discomfort following treatment from the club’s medical staff.

Tests conducted at Valdebebas on Monday confirmed the extent of the problem. “Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg,” the club said. “His recovery will be monitored.”

Sources have indicated the injury may require surgery, which would sideline Mendy for several months. He suffered a similar issue last year that also required an operation and kept him out for nearly six months.

Mendy has made just nine appearances this season in a campaign disrupted by injuries, and the latest setback effectively ends his 2025–26 season. He is also expected to miss the opening months of next season.

The left-back signed a contract extension in 2024, although it was not officially announced by the club. Sources say the deal runs until 2027.

Madrid have been plagued by injury concerns this season. Eder Militao, Arda Güler and Rodrygo are all out and expected to miss the rest of the season. Kylian Mbappe and Dani Carvajal remain unavailable.
