Dortmund Begin Bundesliga Campaign with Win Over Hamburg

Borussia Dortmund made it 12 consecutive Bundesliga opening-day victories after beating newly promoted Hamburger SV 2-0.

Borussia Dortmund wasted little time showing Hamburg just how difficult their return to the Bundesliga could be. The hosts struggled to cope with the visitors’ slick passing in the opening stages, and Dortmund took full advantage inside the first 10 minutes.

Konstantinos Karetsas combined brilliantly with Serhou Guirassy, who worked the ball onto his right foot on the edge of the box before curling a superb effort into the far corner. It was a finish that left Daniel Heuer Fernandes with little chance and gave Dortmund the perfect start.

Hamburg spent much of the first half chasing shadows as Dortmund continued to create openings. Felix Nmecha and Karetsas both came close, but Heuer Fernandes kept his side in the contest with important saves. The hosts barely threatened Gregor Kobel at the other end, but Dortmund were unable to turn their dominance into a second goal.

That finally changed just before half-time. Maximilian Beier’s pass released Giannis Konstantelias into the box, and although his effort took a huge deflection off Sebastiaan Bornauw, the ball flew into the far corner to give Dortmund a deserved 2-0 advantage at the break.

Dortmund continued to control proceedings after the restart, with Konstantelias going close again before being forced off with a knock. Hamburg gradually found more confidence, however, and Patson Daka came within inches of reducing the deficit when his curling effort brushed the outside of the post.

The visitors were handed another boost when Dortmund substitute Samuele Inacio was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Albert Gronbæk.

Hamburg suddenly had a route back into the match, but they failed to make their numerical advantage count. Gronbæk and Albert Sambi Lokonga both sent efforts wide as Dortmund’s defence held firm.

The final whistle eventually brought relief for Dortmund, who began their campaign with another opening-day victory and a clean sheet.
