Martinez says the 41-year-old will not be picked for the World Cup on his reputation alone
Roberto Martinez does not believe that Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia has reduced his impact for Portugal at international level, insisting the captain remains an important figure for the national team.
He has also said Ronaldo will be selected for the World Cup on his capacity to contribute to the team rather than his past achievements.
Martinez travelled to Riyadh earlier this week to watch Al-Nassr draw 1-1 with Al-Hilal as part of a scouting trip that also included monitoring Ruben Neves and Joao Felix.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo has scored 26 goals and provided three assists this season as Al-Nassr pushed to the top of the Saudi Pro League standings. Martinez said his standards have not declined since leaving European football.
“Cristiano continues to have a great desire to win and I see no sign that his level has dropped since he came to Saudi Arabia,” Martinez said.
“He is playing exceptionally well and has proven his importance to the Portuguese national team. His passion continues, even after all the successes and achievements he has reached, and having that hunger is quite remarkable.”
Martinez also stressed that Ronaldo’s reputation alone would not guarantee his place in the Portugal squad ahead of another World Cup campaign.
“Achievements alone are not enough to guarantee a place in the national team,” Martinez said. “It is also necessary to contribute to the team’s success.
“Although he is the captain and has achieved unprecedented success that demonstrates his exceptional talent, Ronaldo has the same responsibilities as any other player on the national team.”
