Como Stun Napoli at the Maradona as Fabregas Earns Huge Victory

Como produced one of the biggest results of the early Serie A season, beating Napoli 2-1 at the Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli came into the game looking to build on their 2-0 victory over Genoa, but Como showed from the opening minutes that they had no intention of sitting back.

Cesc Fabregas’ side enjoyed plenty of possession and immediately looked comfortable against the champions, although Napoli came closest early on when Matias Olivera’s cutback caused chaos inside the six-yard box.

Como eventually turned their possession into a breakthrough in the 16th minute. Assane Diao escaped Olivera down the right before rolling the ball across the box, where Martin Baturina took control and, in one fluid movement, turned before drilling his finish into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

The hosts had a golden opportunity to respond almost immediately, but Noa Lang could only head Matteo Politano’s inviting cross narrowly over the bar.

Como then squandered a huge counter-attacking opportunity after finding themselves five against three, and Napoli made them pay.  Rasmus Hojlund collected the ball on the edge of the area, turned through a crowd of bodies and fired into the bottom corner to restore parity.

The game then swung back in Como’s favour in spectacular fashion. Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa got himself into trouble while trying to play out from the back, sending a poor pass towards Amir Rrahmani that Baturina intercepted. The Como midfielder immediately turned provider, setting up Tasos Douvikas to calmly finish inside the area and restore the visitors’ lead.

Napoli pushed for another equaliser before half-time, but Como continued to look dangerous. Alex Meret had to produce an excellent save to tip Baturina’s header over the bar, while the goalkeeper was fortunate when Nico Paz’s header from the resulting corner almost squirmed underneath him and across the line.

The second half saw Napoli finally begin to take control of the contest. Massimiliano Allegri responded by sending on Kevin De Bruyne, Alisson Santos and Leonardo Spinazzola, and the changes gave the hosts renewed energy. However, Como’s defence refused to buckle. Butez raced off his line to deny Hojlund, while Ivan Smolcic made a brave intervention to prevent De Bruyne from connecting with Stanislav Lobotka’s cross.

Napoli came agonisingly close on several occasions as the pressure mounted. De Bruyne and Alisson Santos both fired narrowly wide, while Marc-Oliver Kempf scrambled a dangerous De Bruyne delivery away from the six-yard box. Como survived the late onslaught, with Lorenzo Lucca and Douvikas also going close at the other end.

There was one final twist deep into stoppage time when Lobotka appeared to have rescued a point for Napoli, only for the goal to be ruled out because play had already been stopped for an offside in the build-up.
