Enzo Maresca is keen on bringing Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from hsi former club Chelsea to Manchester City.

Chelsea are facing a crucial decision over Enzo Fernandez’s future, with Manchester City continuing to monitor the midfielder and the Blues prepared to demand a huge fee if the Argentina international decides he wants to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Fernandez’s situation has become one of the key transfer stories surrounding Chelsea as the new season approaches.

The club are keen to establish where the midfielder stands, with sources indicating that the 25-year-old would prefer a move away despite Chelsea’s public position that he remains an important part of their plans.

If Fernandez does push for an exit, Chelsea are not expected to make the decision easy. The Blues are prepared to place a valuation of at least £116 million on the midfielder, putting him in the same financial bracket as Elliot Anderson, who recently joined Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for that figure.

Chelsea Could Demand More Than £116m for Fernandez

Chelsea could even demand more than Anderson’s £116m fee.

The club’s thinking is that Fernandez’s status as a World Cup winner, combined with his experience as an established Premier League midfielder, makes him an even more valuable asset.

That would represent a significant change from earlier expectations that Chelsea might simply look to recover the £106m they paid Benfica for Fernandez in January 2023. After two-and-a-half years in England and an increasingly important role at Stamford Bridge, the club now believe his market value has risen considerably.

Manchester City could be particularly interested if Fernandez makes it clear that he wants a new challenge. City’s new manager Enzo Maresca already knows the midfielder well from their time together at Chelsea, and their previous relationship could become an important factor if negotiations develop.

City’s interest also comes at an intriguing time, having been linked with other Chelsea players, including Malo Gusto and Pedro Neto. However, Fernandez would represent a considerably bigger investment and would require City to meet Chelsea’s substantial valuation.

Chelsea are also preparing for the possibility of Fernandez leaving by monitoring midfield alternatives. Alex Scott and Adam Wharton are among the players linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, although the club’s recruitment plans could change depending on the outcome of discussions with Fernandez.

For now, Chelsea’s stance remains that Fernandez is a key part of their project and will stay at the club unless he makes it clear that he wants to leave. Talks are expected to take place as the deadline approaches, with the outcome likely to determine whether the Argentine begins the new campaign in west London or becomes one of the summer’s biggest transfers..
