The late winner ended Bafana Bafana’s impressive tournament run and handed the co-hosts their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.
With both nations appearing in the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time, the stakes were high from the opening whistle.

The second half started at a slower pace as Hugo Broos’ men attempted to disrupt Canada’s rhythm. Clear-cut chances were limited until midway through the half, when Oluwaseyi was once again denied by Williams before Mbekezeli Mbokazi reacted quickly to stop Jonathan David from converting the rebound.
Sensing the need for fresh energy, Marsch introduced several substitutes, including Alphonso Davies, who made his first appearance of the tournament.
The Bayern Munich star immediately injected pace into Canada’s attack, threading a brilliant pass through to Promise David, but the striker dragged his shot narrowly wide of the far post.
South Africa threatened briefly through Oswin Appollis, whose powerful effort from distance was comfortably pushed away by Crepeau. However, as extra time approached, Canada continued to push forward in search of the decisive goal that would send them into the next round.
