Borussia Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer says the club is delighted with Niko Kovac’s work but insists there is no urgency to begin negotiations over a new contract.

Borussia Dortmund have no immediate plans to open contract talks with head coach Niko Kovac despite the Croatian entering the final year of his current deal.

Club CEO Carsten Cramer has stressed that Dortmund remain extremely pleased with Kovac’s work since his appointment, but explained that strengthening the squad remains the club’s top priority before discussing a new contract.

Speaking to the media, Cramer said the club’s focus is currently on completing its transfer business before turning its attention to long-term planning with the coaching staff.

“The basic message remains: We are extremely satisfied with Niko,” Cramer said. “But, without wanting to reveal too much, we are still in the process of finalising the squad.”

He added that once the transfer window and squad planning are complete, Dortmund will begin pre-season preparations before sitting down with Kovac at what the club considers the appropriate time.

Cramer also dismissed suggestions that the situation has created any tension behind the scenes. According to the Dortmund executive, Kovac has remained calm about his future and has not applied any pressure on the club to accelerate negotiations.

“Niko is completely relaxed,” Cramer explained, adding that the coach has not been sending messages through agents or attempting to force discussions over a contract extension.

Kovac has been in charge of Borussia Dortmund since February 2025 and has earned the confidence of the club’s hierarchy. While a new deal is expected to be discussed eventually, Dortmund are content to let the process unfold naturally as they prepare for the new season.
