Bernardo Silva has joined Real Madrid on a two-year contract after leaving Manchester City at the end of his nine-year stay at the club.
The 31-year-old Portugal midfielder arrives as a free agent after a highly successful spells in Manchester. Silva is understood to have been attracted by the prospect of working under his compatriot Jose Mourinho, whose return as Madrid head coach was confirmed earlier this month.
Madrid moved quickly to secure Silva’s signature after advancing talks this month. Both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had explored a deal for the midfielder but did not improve their offers once Madrid emerged as favourites to complete the signing.
After joining City from AS Monaco in 2017, Silva made 460 appearances for the club and helped them win six Premier League titles, as well as their first Champions League crown as part of the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign.
He captained City during his final season following the exit of Kyle Walker and appeared in all 38 league matches as they finished second in the Premier League while also lifting the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
The Portugal international is with the national team at the World Cup and featured in both of their June warm-up matches and then against DR Congo on Wednesday. He is expected to complete his move to Madrid after the tournament.
