After the events of the last two games, this was some happy restorative for Barcelona. The Catalans ran riot with a 6-1 victory over Alaves at Camp Nou. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha both scored twice, and Fermin Lopez and Anthony Gordon also got on the scoresheet.

The result lifted Barcelona back to the top of the table after Atletico Madrid had briefly taken first place with their win over Levante earlier.

Hansi Flick’s side took control from the outset and needed just eight minutes to find the opener. Fermin was at the centre of the move as he drove forward before picking out Raphinha inside the penalty area, the Brazilian tapping in to give Barcelona the lead.

Alaves struggled to cope with the pace and movement of their opponents. Abde Rebbach had an opportunity to respond but missed the target. Barcelona soon made him pay for the miss. This time, Fermin was the scorer, collecting a pass from Yamal on the right before driving into the penalty area and sending a powerful shot across Antonio Sivera and into the far corner.

Barcelona were imperious and could have extended their advantage sooner. Sivera produced a fine save to deny Yamal, but there was little he could do when the hosts found their third goal. Fermin was again at the centre of it, winning possession in midfield and then releasing Raphinha with an excellent pass. The Brazilian took a moment to set himself before firing into the far corner.

The hosts kept the heat on Alaves. Just before half-time, they soon combined a series of quick passes around the visitors’ penalty area, and Yamal finished it with a powerful first-time strike to make it 4-0.

By the second half, it was only a question of how many more. Flick introduced Gabriel Jesus as the game approached the hour mark, and the substitute soon helped create another goal. Yamal collected the ball after a neat touch from the Brazilian and lifted it over Sivera.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR review overturned the decision. There was also time for Gordon to make his mark. Released via a pass from Rodri, Gordon raced through on goal and again dinked the ball over Sivera.

Alaves did manage to find a consolation goal in stoppage time, after a poor back pass from Rodri allowed Mariano Diaz to get through on goal, and the former Real Madrid forward calmly beat a stationery Joan Garcia.
