Aston Villa are in talks to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha on loan as Unai Emery looks to rebuild his midfield ahead of the new season.
Aston Villa have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a loan move for midfielder Joao Palhinha as Unai Emery continues to reshape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Portuguese international has emerged as one of Villa’s top midfield targets following significant changes in the club’s engine room.
Villa are looking to strengthen the midfield after losing Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Amadou Onana has been ruled out with a serious knee ligament injury suffered during the World Cup. Those setbacks have forced the Premier League club to accelerate plans to bring in experienced reinforcements.
The Villans are already close to completing a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, while SC Freiburg youngster Johan Manzambi is also expected to arrive after agreeing personal terms. However, Villa are not stopping there and remain determined to add another proven option.
According to reports, Palhinha is now a priority, with Villa hoping to secure the Bayern Munich midfielder on a temporary deal. The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he impressed with his performances across all competitions.
Palhinha featured in 45 matches during his spell with Spurs, contributing seven goals and three assists from midfield. Despite his solid campaign, Tottenham opted against activating the reported €30 million option to make the transfer permanent.
Bayern Munich are now prepared to part ways with the Portuguese international, although the Bundesliga champions are reportedly seeking a fee of around €24 million if a permanent transfer is discussed. Villa, however, are initially exploring the possibility of a loan agreement.
The experienced midfielder has also attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League, Benfica and Sporting CP. Benfica manager Marco Silva, who previously worked with Palhinha at Fulham, is believed to be keen on a reunion, but the chance to continue playing in the Premier League could prove more attractive to the player.
With Champions League football returning to Villa Park, Emery is eager to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts. Palhinha’s experience, defensive discipline and proven quality in English football could make him a valuable addition as Aston Villa prepare for one of their biggest seasons in recent years.
