Arsenal Turn Attention to Arteta Contract Extension After Transfer Window

With Arsenal’s summer business complete, Mikel Arteta’s future is set to become the club’s next major priority as his current contract approaches its final year.

With the transfer window now closed, attention at Arsenal will shift from squad building to the future of the man who has overseen the club’s transformation over the past seven years.

Mikel Arteta’s current contract expires in 2027, meaning Arsenal face an increasingly important decision over a manager who has been in charge since December 2019. The Spaniard is now the Premier League’s longest-serving manager, and talks over a new deal have been ongoing intermittently since the start of the year.

There has been little urgency from Arteta to finalise an extension, however. His priority at the end of last season was delivering results before his focus turned towards strengthening the squad during the summer.

That work is now complete, and Arsenal are expected to make his contract situation a central issue once again.

Arteta signed his previous extension in September 2024, shortly after the transfer window closed. His two most recent deals have both been three-year contracts, meaning a similar arrangement could be on the table this time around.

The manager has consistently expressed his affection for Arsenal and the project he is building in north London. While the club did not deliver every signing he wanted this summer, that is unlikely to have significantly altered his commitment.

Arsenal backed Arteta with a series of important additions as they look to defend their Premier League title. Bruno Guimaraes arrived from Newcastle, while Piero Hincapie’s loan move was made permanent. The Gunners also signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa and Illan Meslier following his departure from Leeds United.

However, the one major attacking addition Arteta wanted never materialised.

Following Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Arteta insisted the club needed to show greater ambition. Arsenal subsequently explored moves for Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez, but none of those pursuits produced the statement signing they had hoped for.

Arteta was closely involved in that process alongside sporting director Andrea Berta. The pair have developed a strong working relationship, and the manager remained heavily involved in discussions throughout the summer as Arsenal searched for a forward capable of taking the team to another level.

That search ultimately ended without the desired player arriving, but Arsenal now have a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.

For much of the past year, Arteta has prioritised the club’s progress over his own contractual situation. He focused on building a stronger squad, improving on last season’s title-winning campaign and giving Arsenal the best possible chance of competing for major honours again. Now, his contract is Arsenal’s priority.
