Arsenal recovered from a poor start to the second half to beat Leeds 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, with substitutes Riccardo Calafiori and Bruno Guimaraes scoring within eight minutes to rescue the Premier League champions from another damaging result.
Mikel Arteta’s side had struggled to create clear chances against a disciplined Leeds team who arrived unbeaten in the league. James Justin put the visitors ahead in the 55th minute, leaving Arsenal at risk of a second consecutive defeat after their 3-0 loss to Brighton before the international break.
But Calafiori restored parity seven minutes later before Guimaraes completed the turnaround with a precise finish in the 68th minute. The victory moved Arsenal level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table, with the defending champions behind on goal difference.
Arsenal had made six changes to their starting lineup, including the selection of Noni Madueke, but the reshuffled side struggled to impose themselves during a frustrating first half. Leeds were more direct in possession and repeatedly found space around the Arsenal defence, forcing David Raya into several important interventions.
Jayden Bogle came close twice in quick succession midway through the first half. His header from Gabriel Gudmundsson’s delivery was blocked by teammate Anton Stach before he tested Raya from a tight angle after Ao Tanaka’s cross had fallen into his path.
Arsenal had their best opportunity in the 21st minute when Madueke delivered from the left and Kai Havertz met the cross with a header from close range. The German, however, directed his effort straight at James Trafford, allowing the Leeds goalkeeper to make a comfortable save.
Raya was again required to keep the scores level shortly before half-time, pushing away Gudmundsson’s effort as Leeds continued to threaten from wide areas. Arsenal went into the break fortunate not to be behind, having struggled to turn their possession into sustained pressure.

The pattern continued after the restart. Martin Odegaard wasted an opportunity to put the hosts ahead when Madueke cut the ball back to the Arsenal captain, whose first-time effort lacked the power to trouble Trafford. At the other end, Tanaka sent a long-range attempt narrowly over the crossbar.
Leeds made their superiority count in the 55th minute. Gudmundsson escaped Ben White on the left and sent a low cross into the penalty area. Raya could not gather the delivery and Justin arrived unmarked to drive the loose ball into the net.
Noah Okafor almost doubled the visitors’ advantage three minutes later but failed to make contact with Bogle’s cross. Arsenal needed an immediate response, and it came through the same flank that had provided their most promising attacking outlet.
Madueke swung a deep cross towards the far post, where White headed the ball back across goal. Calafiori reacted quickest to turn it over the line from close range, bringing Arsenal level in the 62nd minute and giving the home side a much-needed lift.
Arteta responded with a triple substitution, introducing Guimaraes, Viktor Gyokeres and Jurrien Timber as Arsenal sought to take control. The changes quickly altered the tempo of the contest, with Guimaraes bringing greater urgency to the midfield and helping the hosts move the ball forward with more purpose.
The Brazilian made the difference six minutes after coming on. Odegaard exchanged passes with Bukayo Saka before finding Declan Rice inside the penalty area. Rice flicked the ball backwards with his heel, picking out Guimaraes at the edge of the box, and the midfielder guided a first-time finish into the corner to put Arsenal ahead in the 68th minute.
Arsenal had opportunities to extend their lead, Odegaard missing from close range and Saka failing to beat Trafford one-on-one. Leeds had hope until the end but ultimately left empty-handed.
