Carlo Ancelotti says Brazil must develop more high-quality midfielders after the Selecao suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Norway in the World Cup Round of 16.
Carlo Ancelotti admitted Brazil need to produce more high-quality midfielders after the five-time world champions suffered a stunning 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The result marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990, ending their hopes of lifting a sixth global crown.

Brazil struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm throughout the contest despite creating several opportunities. Norway looked dangerous from the outset, even having an early Sander Berge goal ruled out for offside, while goalkeeper Orjan Nyland gave his side a huge boost by saving Bruno Guimaraes’ first-half penalty.

The decision to hand Guimaraes penalty duties surprised many supporters, particularly with Neymar and Raphinha both among Brazil’s recognised spot-kick specialists.
Ancelotti defended the choice, explaining that the coaching staff had relied on statistical analysis when selecting the taker.
“According to that, Neymar was the best person to take the penalty, and then Raphinha, and then Bruno,” Ancelotti said. “So we chose him because we felt he was the best option on the field.” Neymar and Raphinha both started the match on the bench, leaving Guimaraes to step up.
Brazil eventually introduced Neymar during the second half to a thunderous reception from the crowd, and the tempo of their play improved.
However, Erling Haaland struck twice in the closing stages to put Norway in control, and Neymar’s stoppage-time penalty proved nothing more than a consolation as Brazil crashed out of the tournament.

Ancelotti felt his side had managed the game reasonably well in the opening stages but explained that Norway’s disciplined defensive structure prevented Brazil from applying sustained pressure without exposing themselves at the back. He believed taking greater risks earlier in the game could have played into Norway’s hands.
Looking beyond the defeat, the Italian coach acknowledged that Brazil need to refresh their midfield options. He stressed the importance of developing a new generation of technically gifted players capable of maintaining the country’s traditional standards in the centre of the pitch.
“We need some young talent, we need some high-level players coming into Brazilian football,” Ancelotti said. While disappointed by the result, he insisted Brazil had performed respectably overall, adding that defeat is sometimes part of football and that his team will continue searching for new ideas as they begin preparations for the next chapter.
