Carlo Ancelotti says his decision to reject Italy was not about money or contracts, insisting his commitment to Brazil made staying with the Seleção the right choice.
Carlo Ancelotti has explained why he declined the opportunity to become Italy’s head coach, insisting his decision had nothing to do with contract negotiations and everything to do with honoring his commitment to Brazil.
Speaking to reporters, the veteran Italian coach addressed the approach made by former Italy technical director Paolo Maldini, who had identified Ancelotti as one of the leading candidates to succeed the Azzurri’s previous manager.
“It’s not a contract issue; that’s not the reason,” Ancelotti said. “It’s because I have a commitment to the CBF and to this country, because this country has welcomed me so warmly during this first year.”
The 67-year-old added that remaining with Brazil was both the right and fair decision after the support he has received since taking charge of the five-time world champions. “I want to stay here. And I thanked the Italian Federation, of course, but I want to stay here because I believe it’s right and fair to remain in a country that has welcomed me so warmly, at an institution that has given me the opportunity to work.”
Ancelotti was appointed Brazil head coach just a year ago and recently signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) until the 2030 FIFA World Cup, reinforcing his long-term commitment to the national team.
Italy Turned to Roberto Mancini After Missing Out on Top Targets
Before approaching Andrea Pirlo, former Italy technical director Paolo Maldini reportedly contacted both Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola in an attempt to persuade either manager to take over the national team.
However, Italy’s plans changed dramatically after FIGC president Giovanni Malagò declined to approve Pirlo’s appointment, citing concerns over the former midfielder’s commercial links with a Russian betting company.
The decision ultimately led to Maldini and his advisor Leonardo resigning from their roles at the Italian Football Federation. Following their departures, Malagò moved to appoint Roberto Mancini as Italy’s new head coach, while Claudio Ranieri was named the federation’s new technical director as part of the restructuring.
