AC Milan are yet to win a pre-season game and their latest defeat to Chelsea has raised concerns about Amorim as the head coach.

Ruben Amorim is already under pressure at AC Milan despite the new Serie A season yet to begin, with the Rossoneri’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in their final pre-season friendly adding to concerns over the Portuguese coach’s start at San Siro.

The result has also reportedly made fans put Amorim among one of the first managers to be dismissed next season.

The heavy defeat in Jakarta was hardly the ideal final test for AC Milan, who struggled to contain Chelsea and offered little going forward. While pre-season results should not normally determine a manager’s future, the performance has increased the scrutiny on Amorim ahead of a campaign in which expectations will be high.

Amorim, however, has refused to use the defeat as an excuse to demand further reinforcements. Speaking to the media after the game, the AC Milan coach insisted he remains satisfied with the squad at his disposal and believes the team can be ready for the opening league fixture against Torino.

“We are thinking things through. Of course, in football you don’t have time, but we want to do things the right way,” Amorim said. “And if you look at our past, sometimes we have made mistakes. We won’t make them again. I’m very happy with the squad.”

The former Sporting coach also stressed that he does not want Milan to react emotionally to a poor result in the transfer market. Amorim revealed that he had requested the signings of Sergio Ramos and Mario Gila and was pleased with the club’s efforts to complete those deals quickly, suggesting he believes the squad already has enough quality to compete.

“The beauty of being a coach is not just asking for more players,” Amorim said. “We have some really good players, including the youngsters, and we will be ready for our opening match.”
