Liverpool have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their trip to Old Trafford, with Alexander Isak ruled out of the match against Manchester United due to injury.

The Sweden international suffered a groin strain in training this week and is expected to undergo further scans to determine the severity of the problem. His absence adds to what has already been a difficult first season at Anfield following his £125m move from Newcastle United.

Isak has struggled for fitness this season, making just 13 starts in the Premier League and scoring three goals. He spent several months on the sidelines after suffering a leg fracture against Tottenham in December.

His latest setback leaves manager Arne Slot with limited attacking options for Sunday’s fixture. Hugo Ekitike has already been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an Achilles injury during Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Mohamed Salah is also unavailable with a muscle injury, although he is expected to return before the end of the season.

Liverpool are close to confirming their place in the Champions League next season and are in fact targeting a third place finish, which they can achieve if they beat United at Old Trafford.
