Manager says the Hungarian gives everything no matter where he plays

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has praised Dominik Szoboszlai’s “unbelievable” performance against Arsenal, after the Hungarian struck a superb late freekick to secure Liverpool a 1-0 victory.

Szoboszlai has been deployed as a right-back in the last two games due to injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley. He also made an important contribution to the champions’ late victory over Newcastle last week with a clever dummy that set up youngster Rio Ngumoha.

Slot said: “He’s always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like.

“If you wear this shirt, you should give everything no matter what position you play. As a midfielder, he’s always the first one to track back and to press high.

“And today I don’t think he did anything wrong. Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has.”

It wasn’t vintage Liverpool on Sunday, just as they were far from their best against Newcastle last week, with the Magpies crawling back from two goals down to draw level despite being a man down for the entire second half.

However, the champions managed to grind out victories in both games against potential top five contenders. Slot said mentality was the biggest factor for their success.

“We weren’t perfect last season by the way as well,” said Slot. “But still, what you can see is a great mentality and everybody wants to work so hard to get a result over the line.”
