Martinez was not in Villa’s squad against Crystal Palace on Sunday evening
Manchester United are considering a late push to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Talks have also taken place with Belgian side Royal Antwerp over 23-year-old Senne Lammens, but United are understood to be keeping close watch on Martinez’s situation at Villa Park.
A loan bid for the Argentina international was turned down earlier in the summer.
United’s recruitment team have accelerated efforts to secure another goalkeeper after an unconvincing start to the season from both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
Onana was culpable for one of the goals in United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, while Bayindir, who has been preferred in the league, has made costly errors in games against Arsenal and Burnley and looked shaky in all three games he has played so far.
Martinez was not in Villa’s squad against Crystal Palace on Sunday evening but manager Unai Emery refused to talk about the goalkeeper.
United manager Ruben Amorim defended his current options when asked about the goalkeeping situation following the 3-2 win over Burnley at the weekend.
Amorim said: “Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.
“The players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. So it’s not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve.”
