Manchester United manager says he “always loves” his players when they “give everything”

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has praised his players’ commitment after a stoppage-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes sealed a 3-2 win over Burnley at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese said on Friday that he “sometimes loves” and “sometimes hates” his players, but he clarified on Saturday that he loves them when they work hard on the pitch.

Amorim said: “When they put the effort in, I always love them. Even when Amad is missing that kind of goal [a clear chance against Burnley], I love Amad if he’s giving everything.”

United had twice let their lead slip against the Clarets, but Fernandes converted from the spot deep into added time after VAR advised referee Sam Barrott to review Jaidon Anthony’s shirt pull on Amad Diallo.

The contact began outside the area but was judged to have continued inside, giving United a chance to grab a sorely needed late winner.

Amorim said: “I think we need to understand that we should always be on this level of effort. Because even in the game, we played well in the beginning. I think we struggled when we changed the characteristics of the players.

“The match is not so perfect and you can feel that the team struggled a little bit, especially in the second half. But the effort was always there.

“It ended well, I think we deserved to win the game, I think we created a lot of chances, we should go to the half-time with a bigger advantage.”
