FA Cup winners are in the market for defensive cover but it is not possible to find a suitable replacement in time, says manager

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has warned against the club selling Marc Guehi before Monday’s transfer deadline, as they would be unable to replace the England defender at this stage of the window.

Liverpool have been tracking Guehi, who has a year left on his contract, but have not matched Palace’s £40m valuation. Despite the uncertainty, Glasner was clear in his stance that the centre-back must remain at Selhurst Park.

“From my side, he has to [stay],” Glasner said. “It’s not possible at the moment to find a Marc Guehi replacement who can play straight in the Premier League, being a starter, being consistent.”

Palace have been in the market for defensive cover this summer. A deal in excess of £23m has been agreed with Toulouse for centre-back Jaydee Canvot, but the France U-20 international is not experienced enough to replace Guehi yet.

Other options the FA Cup winners have explored in recent weeks include Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji and Monaco’s Mohammed Salisu, but it is still uncertain whether a deal for any of them can be done.

Palace face Aston on Villa on Sunday in their final league fixture before the window closes.
