Decision to play or not to play the fixture in the United States is expected on 11 September
Uefa is set to rule on whether the La Liga fixture between Barcelona and Villareal can be staged in Miami.
The European football governing body is scheduled to make the decision following a proposal submitted by the Spanish football federation (RFEF). In turn, the RFEF submitted the proposal after it had received and processed a request on the matter from La Liga.
An approval would see the La Liga clash between La Blaugrana and the Yellow Submarine moved to the United States on the weekend of 20-21 December. The decision is expected on 11 September, when Uefa’s executive committee meets in Tirana, Albania.
If the match were to go ahead in Miami, it would mark the first time a European domestic league game is played overseas.
However, the plan has drawn sharp criticism from several quarters. Notably, Real Madrid have formally urged Uefa to block the move, with the 36-time Spanish champions warning it would undermine the balance and integrity of the league.
Player representatives have also come out against the idea. David Aganzo, president of the Spanish players’ union (AFE), opposed the proposal during the RFEF’s board vote on the matter.
Aganzo said he had voted against it because players were never consulted, describing that as “a lack of respect”.
