Bayer Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag expressed confidence in Chelsea’s new signing Jorrel Hato, predicting success for the young Dutch defender at Stamford Bridge.

Erik ten Hag, the current Bayer Leverkusen manager and former Ajax boss, has tipped Jorrel Hato to excel at Chelsea.

Ten Hag observed Hato’s rise at Ajax before leaving to take charge of Manchester United in the summer of 2022. Despite narrowly missing Hato’s time at the Amsterdam club, which started in February 2023, Ten Hag believes the 19-year-old defender has developed and progressed remarkably well.

Hato joined Chelsea from Ajax earlier this summer in a deal worth €44 million. Ten Hag’s Bayer Leverkusen side faced Chelsea in a pre-season friendly, where Hato came off the bench. Despite the loss, Ten Hag was impressed by Hato’s abilities and predicted a bright future for the young defender at Chelsea.

“You always need a bit of time, but he has an excellent mentality, so he can develop very quickly,” Ten Hag said.

“He has all the elements, all the qualities in his game to show that he can become a very successful player.” Ten Hag’s confidence in Hato’s abilities is evident in his comments, and he believes the young defender will thrive in the Premier League.

Hato’s versatility is another factor that could contribute to his success at Chelsea. According to Ten Hag, Hato can play both as a centre-half and left-back, making him a valuable asset to the team. This flexibility will be particularly useful with centre-half Levi Colwill out for an extended period due to a significant knee injury.

Chelsea kick off their Premier League campaign this Sunday with an away game at Community Shield winners Crystal Palace. Hato will be looking to make a strong impression and establish himself as a key player in the team. With his excellent mentality and impressive abilities, he is well-equipped to succeed in the Premier League.
