Former club defender says Liverpool’s approach “doesn’t look really planned”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said that Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is not worth £150m as the player’s future remains up in the air this summer.

Liverpool made a move for the player last week, proposing a £110m fee, which Newcastle swiftly rejected. It is thought that the club will only sanction a sale for their No 9 for a fee of £150m.

Carragher said: “It will be an amazing signing but from a Liverpool fan point of view, I don’t want the club to spend £150m on Isak.

I want Liverpool to sign Isak but £150m for me feels like an Mbappe. You should be getting Mbappe for £150m.”

The former Liverpool defender also feels the club’s approach to the situation is disorderly and “doesn’t look really planned”. The Premier League champions have already spent a significant sum this window to bring in Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt, but are now proposing another huge move for Isak who plays in the same position. They risk ending up with the most expensive second-choice striker in world football.

“I could probably imagine that [Isak] was Liverpool’s No 1 target but there’s something about Liverpool buying a striker [Ekitike] for £80m and he’s a back-up,” said Carragher. “There’s something about it that doesn’t sit right to me.

“I look at Isak, he’s obviously thrown his toys out of the pram once Arsenal and Liverpool signed a striker. From him and his agent’s point of view, did they not tell Newcastle months ago that they wanted to move on? It just seems a little bit messy.”
