Forward says “I don’t think I’ve shown my best form”

Joshua Zirkzee has said he has no issue with Manchester United’s pursuit of another centre-forward, insisting he welcomes the added competition.

United are working to address their goalscoring issues, having netted just 44 Premier League goals last season.

The club’s recruitment drive has so far seen Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arrive at Old Trafford. More attacking signings are expected, with United having narrowed down their striker search to two candidates in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

Zirkzee, who joined United from Bologna for £36.5m last summer, has struggled to settle in the Premier League. He managed only three league goals in his debut campaign and missed the final month of the season with a hamstring injury before returning for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Despite the pressure to deliver, the 24-year-old says he isn’t concerned about being pushed down the pecking order.

“I think it’s part of being at this club,” said Zirkzee. “To be honest I don’t read the news but if another striker were to come I guess it’s only good competition so I’m not really worried.

“Everything is for the team, there’s no selfishness here, that’s not my mantra. If it were to help the team then great.”

The Dutchman believes there is much he can add to Amorim’s squad next season.

“I don’t think I’ve shown my best form,” Zirkzee said. “I think I was on my way towards it but I think there’s improvement every day for all of us.”
