Wissa is eager to make the move to Tyneside and is frustrated by Brentford’s handling of negotiations

Newcastle United remain keen on signing Yoane Wissa, although they are prepared to explore other targets if Brentford refuse to lower their demands for the striker.

The Magpies saw a £25m bid for Wissa rejected earlier this month and believe Brentford’s asking price is above what they are willing to pay for the 28-year-old.

Wissa is eager to make the move to Tyneside and is frustrated by Brentford’s handling of negotiations, according to Sky Sports.

He has reportedly informed the club he does not wish to return to training and sees the opportunity to play Champions League football at Newcastle as a rare chance at this stage of his career.

Wissa left Brentford’s pre-season camp in Portugal earlier this week to return to the UK for discussions with the club’s hierarchy.

Brentford, however, are reluctant to sanction a sale after already losing Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United in a £71m deal.

Between them, Wissa and Mbeumo scored 39 league goals last season, more than half of the club’s total. Therefore, the club are wary of further weakening their attack without replacements in place.

Despite reports, new Brentford head coach Keith Andrews said he expects Wissa to rejoin the squad next week.

“There are clubs interested and he felt it was the right thing to go back to London,” said Andrews. “It’s simple really, he folds back into the group next week when we come back to training.”
