Club remain in discussions over several striker options but no reliable links have emerged

Manchester United are preparing for the possibility of starting the new season without signing a new centre-forward, following a series of failed attempts to land a No 9.

Ruben Amorim has made it clear he wants to add a No 9 to his squad to share responsibilities with Rasmus Hojlund, but United have been left frustrated in their pursuit of several targets.

The club tried to sign Liam Delap but the English forward chose Chelsea. United also made enquiries about Viktor Gyokeres but he chose Arsenal. The latest is Hugo Ekitike, whom United were interested in but has now moved to Liverpool in a deal worth up to £79m.

There is currently no guarantee that a striker will arrive at Old Trafford before the window closes, according to ESPN.

United have already spent £135m this summer to bring in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to strengthen their attack. However, both players are expected to play as No 10s on either side of a striker rather than centrally.

United scored only 44 goals last season so the hierarchy believes it is vital to strengthen this area as much as possible.

The club remain in discussions about other striker options but no reliable links have emerged.
