With three years left on his current deal and Newcastle under no financial pressure to sell, any move would likely depend on Isak himself
Liverpool have opened talks with Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak as they step up efforts to bring in a top-level centre-forward ahead of the new season.
No official bid has been submitted, but the Merseyside club have made it known they are willing to do business at around £120 million for the 25-year-old, according to The Athletic.
Newcastle have previously said Isak is not for sale. However, if the player expresses a desire to move, it could shift the dynamic in favour of Liverpool.
Isak enjoyed a prolific 2024-25 campaign with Newcastle, scoring 27 goals in 42 matches as the Magpies finished fifth in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League. Since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £60m, he has netted 62 goals in 109 appearances.
With three years left on his current deal and Newcastle under no financial pressure to sell, any move would likely depend on the player himself and whether he is tempted by the opportunity to lead the line at Anfield.
Liverpool have already spent heavily this summer, breaking their club record with the £116m signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. But the club remain in the market for a natural No 9. Federico Chiesa has been considered for the role, but he is likely to leave Anfield this summer. So too is Darwin Nunez, who has not quite been the player he was at Benfica.
The interest in improving the attack predates the recent demise of forward Diogo Jota earlier this month, but it has made the need more urgent.
If Liverpool are to pay a fee in the region of £120m for Isak, it is likely that Nunez will be moved on to help fund the deal.
Newcastle have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt for striker Hugo Ekitike. The intention at St James’s Park is to play him alongside Isak. However, if the Swede were to sign for Liverpool then Ekitike could be his replacement if the deal is done this summer.
Besides Isak, Liverpool have also made enquiries about Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, but nothing concrete has emerged yet.
