Jota was aged 28 and had 182 appearances for Liverpool; brother Andre Silva was also involved in the fatal crash
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died following a fatal car crash in the early hours of Thursday morning in the northwestern Spanish province of Zamora.
The accident occurred near the town of Carbajales de Alba, close to the border with Portugal, as Jota, 28, was travelling with his younger brother Andre, 26.
Authorities say the vehicle veered off the road under unclear circumstances before erupting into flames. The fire spread quickly, engulfing the surrounding dry vegetation and complicating rescue efforts.
Emergency services, alerted by passing motorists, arrived swiftly but were unable to save the occupants.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and won one Premier League title, one FA Cup and two League Cups at Anfield. He was part of Arne Slot’s title-winning side last season, after which he also won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.
Chief of the Portuguese Football Federation Pedro Proenca said: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated.
“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.”
