Serious improvements are expected from Amorim’s Manchester United after a summer transfer window and full preseason training

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes the club should set their sights on a top-eight finish in the Premier League next season, following the club’s difficult 2024-25 campaign.

United were marooned near the bottom of the table for most of the season, finally finishing in 15th place, just three spots above the drop zone.

Head coach Ruben Amorim, who came in mid-season after Erik ten Hag’s sacking, will be having his first full campaign at the club. The Portuguese is expected to turn the club’s fortunes around with a summer transfer window and full preseason training under their belt.

“I think if you finish 15th [last season], then United have got to be looking to finish in at least the top eight, top six,” Ferdinand said. “I don’t think you should be looking outside of that.

“And that’s from someone who only thought about winning the league at United. So it’s a big come-down in that sense.”

Amorim is looking to bring in proven forwards to sharpen his attack. Having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, the club are also targeting Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, with one bid for the Cameroon international already rejected and another expected in coming days.
