32-year-old has been a standout performer since joining Villa from Arsenal in 2020, but a move away from Villa Park may be on the cards this summer

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has addressed speculation over his future as reports continue to link him with a potential move to Manchester United this summer.

The 32-year-old has been a standout performer since joining Villa from Arsenal in 2020, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers and playing a pivotal role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph. His form for club and country has consistently drawn attention from Europe’s elite, but this summer marks the clearest sign yet that a transfer may be on the cards.

After what appeared to be a farewell gesture to Villa supporters following the club’s final home match of the season against Tottenham, Martinez has now responded to questions about his future.

“My future? I don’t know, I come here to play for the national team, and that’s the only thing that matters to me right now,” he told reporters after linking up with the Argentina squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

“Do I want to move to a new club? The transfer window just opened, so there’s still a long way to go.”

While Barcelona had been linked to the goalkeeper earlier in the year, the La Liga side have shifted focus to Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, leaving Manchester United as the main club still in contention. Martinez, with Premier League pedigree and proven big-match ability, is a potential upgrade from United’s Andre Onana, who has had two underwhelming campaigns and whose future increasingly looks like it is away from Old Trafford.

Martinez’s comments suggest he is in no rush to resolve his future, with Argentina set to face Chile and Colombia in June despite already having qualified for the 2026 World Cup. However, a decision is expected shortly after the international window closes.
