Player is “very happy” at Betis but points out he still has a contract with Manchester United

Brazilian winger Antony has refused to commit to a Manchester United return following the end of his loan spell at Real Betis. The 24-year-old reignited his form during a promising stint in Spain, but his long-term future still has a question mark heading into the summer.

“I don’t know what will happen in the future, only God knows,” Antony told CBS Sports after Betis’ 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League final.

“My work is playing and I’m doing that well. I have a lot of affection for Betis, for everyone, but I have a contract with Man United and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Antony joined United in 2022 for a staggering £85 million, brought in by former boss Erik ten Hag who had previously managed him at Ajax. But the Brazilian’s time in Manchester failed to justify the price tag. He scored just eight goals across 55 appearances in all competitions before being shipped out in January after falling out of favour under new manager Ruben Amorim.

But his half-season in Seville was a breath of fresh air. Playing with freedom and confidence, Antony scored nine goals in all competitions and helped Betis reach their first European final. Although they fell short against Chelsea, Antony’s form has prompted calls from fans and pundits in Spain to retain him permanently.

“I’m very happy here, everyone knows that, but I have a contract,” he reiterated. “Now I will go to the national team and then on holiday. Then we will see what happens in the future.”
