Salah signed a contract extension with Liverpool in April, keeping him at the club till 2027
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has revealed that he was on the verge of joining the Saudi Pro League earlier this year before ultimately deciding to extend his stay at Anfield. In an interview with Egyptian TV channel On Sport, Salah said that negotiations with Saudi officials were “serious” and that a move was imminent had he not renewed his contract with Liverpool.
“It was a good opportunity to me,” said Salah. “If I hadn’t renewed with Liverpool it would have happened. My relations with SPL officials are very good, we talked a lot, and the negotiations were serious.”
The 32-year-old’s decision to remain with Liverpool culminated in a new contract signed in April, extending his tenure until 2027. This extension came amid a stellar season where Salah ultimately clinched the Premier League Golden Boot with 29 goals and led the league with 18 assists, earning him the Playmaker of the Season award. His exceptional performance also secured him the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for the third time, equalling Thierry Henry’s record.
On his extended contract with Liverpool, Salah said: “The negotiations were long, I know the club’s policy [in negotiations], we reached a middle ground that made us all happy.
“Part of the pressure on the club came from the fans, I know from the start that they wanted me to continue, and they played their role in all of this.”
