Club had originally planned to hold a barbecue instead of a victory parade in the event of a trophy win
Manchester United will be pushing forward with the planned team barbecue, despite falling short in the Europa League final against Tottenham.
The barbecue was originally conceived by club chiefs as a low-key way to celebrate potential European success after their domestic disaster of a campaign. It was thought to be inappropriate to hold a victory parade given that they are finishing nearly bottom of the Premier League.
The gathering was expected to be cancelled following United’s 1-0 defeat in Bilbao. However, it is now understood that the event will still go ahead, according to The Mirror. It won’t be a celebration but a chance for players, staff and their families to reflect, regroup and show solidarity after a bruising campaign.
It has been a bitter season at Old Trafford. A dressing room filled with uncertainty, inconsistent performances, a trophyless run, and the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish have left fans and pundits questioning the identity and direction of the team. But despite the circumstances, the United hierarchy still believe that the current project should be given room to grow. A full pre-season and good summer recruitment is expected to provide Amorim with what he needs to begin rebuilding the footballing fortunes of the club.
One of the club’s primary transfer targets, Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, is reportedly close to sealing a move to Old Trafford. The Brazilian attacker is seen as an ideal fit for Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 setup.
The players also seem aligned with their manager. Luke Shaw, speaking after the final, made his support clear. “I’m 100 per cent sure that [Amorim is] the right man for us because I see it every day,” he said.
“The standards that he has, what he demands from us, the view that he has for the club, for the players, for the coaching staff. A lot of changes are happening at the same time, but ultimately it’s going to be what we do on the pitch.
“We have to take responsibility from that. Nobody apart from us is going on to the pitch and trying to get results.”
