Pressure on the Manchester United head coach has increased after a disappointing loss in the Europa League final
Ruben Amorim should “walk” because he is “inept of ideas” and cannot manage a club like Manchester United, former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara has said.
Speaking to Sky Sports in the aftermath of United’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, O’Hara delivered a scathing assessment of the club’s latest failure. “Shocking. I thought they were terrible,” he said. “They were so bad. It is actually probably the worst Manchester United final performance I’ve ever seen. They were absolutely awful.”
United’s latest setback marked the end of a bruising season that saw them finish outside the European spots in the Premier League and fail to capture any major silverware. Their performance in the final lacked enough energy to turn things around when it started going wrongly for them, something O’Hara laid squarely at Amorim’s feet.
“The manager’s inept of ideas, didn’t know how to change it, didn’t know how to affect the game. Made substitutions too late,” said O’Hara. “He should walk because he ain’t the right man for the job. He’s really not the right man for the job.”
O’Hara also bluntly questioned Amorim’s motivation to stay, pointing to the financial gain for staying. “He should walk but no one walks anymore because there’s too much money on offer. So he’s not going to walk,” he said.
United’s struggles do go beyond just tactics on the pitch. Behind the scenes, there is a massive transformation under minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with major cost-cutting measures underway. Ratcliffe’s shake-up reportedly includes plans to sack up to 450 employees and sell several players to trim the wage bill. O’Hara believes that these moves have such negative optics that the club will struggle to attract new talent.
“Who’s going to join United?” said O’Hara. “They’re 16th in the table. They’ve got no European football and everyone knows that the club is cost-cutting the wages. They’re getting rid of everyone. With Jim Ratcliffe, it’s like a fire sale. Everyone’s up for sale. Who actually is going to want to join United?”
