Ipswich gave Delap permission to travel to Manchester this week
Manchester United have entered a decisive stage in their plans to sign Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap, holding face-to-face talks with the 22-year-old this week.
Delap was granted permission by Ipswich to travel to Manchester and meet directly with club executives, a clear sign that negotiations are at an advanced stage to bring the young forward to Old Trafford. The England U21 international impressed in his debut Premier League campaign, netting 12 goals and showcasing the kind of work rate and potential that has piqued the interest of several top-flight clubs.
Delap’s £30 million release clause has made him an appealing option for United. Chelsea have also shown interest in the player and Delap is expected to weigh his options carefully before making a final decision, but it is understood that United are at the forefront of negotiations.
While Delap represents one part of the long-term vision, United are also pushing ahead with talks for 25-year-old Matheus Cunha. Negotiations with the Wolves forward are progressing well, with both sides reportedly close to agreeing on personal terms.
United are expected to activate Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause once the transfer window opens in June. According to reports, the clause can be satisfied in three instalments: a lump sum upon signing, followed by two equal payments over the next two years. However, United may still look to negotiate slightly more favourable payment terms.
Crucially, the outcome of Wednesday night’s Europa League final against Tottenham will not change the club’s ambitions in the transfer market. Victory would secure Champions League qualification, but even without it, United are confident they have the finances to secure both Delap and Cunha this summer.
