Mohamed Salah’s 400th Liverpool appearance will be one he’ll likely want to forget.
The Egyptian forward had a golden opportunity to equal the Premier League’s goal involvement record, but inexplicably side-footed Cody Gakpo’s low cross wide of an empty net against Brighton. The miss was a stark reminder that even the greatest players have off days.
Just two months ago, Salah was on track to shatter Premier League records and produce the greatest attacking individual season in the competition’s history. His double against Southampton on March 8 took him to 27 goals and 17 assists in 29 matches, leaving him mere goal involvements shy of the record of 47 held jointly by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole.
However, Salah’s form has dipped significantly since then, with just one goal and one assist in eight matches. He’s now one goal involvement short of the record and two shy of the assist record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne.
Despite the recent slump, Liverpool boss Arne Slot remains confident that Salah will bounce back. “The first thought that goes through my head when I see the ball moving towards Mo, I’m like, ‘It’s quite a big chance, this could lead to a goal’,” Slot said. “He’s been almost inhuman throughout this season.”
With one game left – the visit of Crystal Palace to Anfield – Salah still has a chance to break the record. As he said after helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title, “Hopefully I’m going to break [the goal involvements record] soon. It’s something pushing me forward to just keep going and keep working hard.”
Can Salah still achieve the unthinkable? Given his incredible form this season, it’s certainly possible. One thing’s for sure – the Reds’ fans will be cheering him on as he takes to the pitch against Crystal Palace.
