Arsenal Face Midfield Crisis Ahead of Newcastle Clash

Rice scores two freekicks to give Arsenal lead over Real Madrid.

Arsenal is grappling with a significant midfield crisis ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners’ midfield options have been severely limited due to a combination of injuries and suspensions, posing a challenge for manager Mikel Arteta in assembling a competitive lineup.

In their recent 2-2 draw against Liverpool, Arsenal showcased resilience by coming back from a two-goal deficit, with goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino. However, Merino’s second yellow card in the 79th minute means he will miss the Newcastle game due to suspension.

Declan Rice, who missed the Liverpool match with a hip problem, remains a doubt for the upcoming fixture.

Arteta commented on Rice’s condition, stating, “I think he is struggling, it does not look good.”

Jorginho, recovering from a lung injury sustained against Brentford on April 12, was in the matchday squad for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain but did not play. He was also absent from the squad against Liverpool, indicating he may not be fully fit.

Leandro Trossard, who has operated as a number eight this season, is also a concern after being substituted with a possible muscle injury during the Liverpool game. If Trossard is unavailable, Arteta might consider deploying Oleksandr Zinchenko in midfield alongside Martin Ødegaard and Thomas Partey. In attack, Martinelli could move into the center-forward role, with Bukayo Saka on the left wing and Ethan Nwaneri on the right.

This midfield conundrum comes at a crucial juncture in Arsenal’s season, as they aim to secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. Arteta’s ability to adapt and make strategic decisions will be pivotal in navigating this challenging period.
