Intense high line not a problem and players are “happy” with it, says coach Hansi Flick
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has said that his side must move on from their recent Champions League exit as they prepare for a crucial La Liga clash against Real Madrid.
Despite a 7-6 aggregate loss to Inter Milan in the semi-finals, Flick believes his team is ready to refocus on domestic success.
“We’re doing well. After the defeat in Milan, everyone knows it’s not easy but we’re doing things right,” said Flick.
“We’ve talked about what we want to do in these two weeks. El Clásico is important, we have to show how well we can play. We have to show confidence.”
Barcelona currently sit top of La Liga, four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid with four matches remaining. A victory in Sunday’s clásico at Montjuic would bring them within one win of securing their 28th league title.
Flick also defended his team’s performances at the back. Barcelona have been criticised this season for an intense high line that leaves them vulnerable to counter attacks, with Inter Milan in particular taking advantage of this to progress to the Champions League final at Barca’s expense.
Rival coach Carlo Ancelotti said earlier this week that with Kylian Mbappe in the squad, Real Madrid can take advantage of that high line to win the clásico.
But Flick said: “When we started, I was clear about the philosophy. There have been games, especially at the beginning, where we saw doubts, but the team has adapted well.”
“They have also been improving and are happy with the style and how we want to play. When you see the quality of the players you are happy.”
