Arsenal legend believes criticism and disappointment following exit of Alexander-Arnold is difficult to understand

Arsenal Ian Wright has backed Trent Alexander-Arnold after the full-back announced his decision to leave Liverpool and join Real Madrid on a free transfer. Wright described the move as “just the next step on his journey”.

Alexander-Arnold announced his departure from Liverpool after securing a 20th Premier League title under new boss Arne Slot. The right-back, arguably the best passer in the world in his position, is set to complete a move to the Bernabeu.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions among Liverpool supporters, with some expressing disappointment over his exit. Former Liverpool defender and current pundit Jamie Carragher said that the move would diminish Alexander-Arnold’s status at the club.

However, Wright could only see the maturity and thoughtfulness behind Alexander-Arnold’s choice.

“Did you see his statement? It was beautiful,” said Wright. “He spoke with such eloquence simply because he’s come to a point where it’s just the next step on his journey. It’s not about [Madrid] being better. I’m delighted for him.

He further added, “I cannot understand that people are not excited about the fact he’s won everything he can win there, and now he’s going to arguably one of the best in the world.

“It’s like people can’t be happy for the fact that he’s come from here and he’s going there.”

Alexander-Arnold achieved significant success with Liverpool in his 10 years in the first team, including winning two Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy. He also tops the all-time assist charts for defenders in the Premier League, with 64 assists.
