Guler scored a stunning opener as Madrid beat Celta Vigo 3-2 and manager Ancelotti has lauded his maturity
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has offered high praise for Arda Guler’s development following Los Blancos’ narrow 3-2 win over Celta Vigo, saying that the young midfielder is now a genuine contender to start in the upcoming El Clasico against Barcelona.
The 20-year-old Turkey international has endured a season marked by limited minutes despite high expectations, but things appear to be looking up
Before the game, Ancelotti spoke specially about Guler, saying that he had “progressed very well” and “become more important”. He then suggested that the 20-year-old would go on to become a great central player for Real Madrid.
The youngster justified the commendation of his manager against Celta Vigo with a stunning shot to give Los Blancos the lead. Speaking after the game, Ancelotti said that Guler’s progression has come through his patience and perseverance within Madrid’s competitive squad.
“I have the responsibility to try to manage the squad better, not the individual,” said the veteran Italian manager, who has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bernabeu and to Brazil’s Selecao.
“Sometimes it affects some players more than others. I’ve already said it: you have to put up with the bench to be a starter at Real Madrid. He will do better in the coming years.
“I think he’s done well on the bench, it hasn’t bothered him, and he’s progressed very well.”
The tactician then confirmed that Guler is now firmly in the conversation for a starting spot in Sunday’s decisive clash with Barcelona due to his positive performances.
“He can play, that’s true. He will compete to be in the starting 11. There is no doubt about that,” said Ancelotti.
The youngster’s mindset is much improved, and he is adequately handling the pressures of playing for one of the world’s most demanding clubs, according to Ancelotti.
“I see him much better, with less responsibility this year. The pressure was too much for his age. He is handling it better. He has more confidence, if he makes a mistake it’s not the end of the world.
“Two months ago I gave him stick and I think I have to congratulate him because he has done a good job.”
