Madrid boss’ meeting with Florentino Perez comes after memorable defeat to Barcelona in Seville

Carlo Ancelotti’s second tenure at Real Madrid could be approaching its end, with the Italian manager set to meet club president Florentino Perez in the coming days to discuss his future.

The anticipated talks follow a series of damaging results that have caused Madrid’s season to collapse. A painful 3-2 defeat to Barcelona after extra time in Saturday’s Copa del Rey final compounded the disappointment of the earlier Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal, where Madrid suffered a 5-1 aggregate loss, including a 2-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Though Los Blancos remain mathematically alive in the La Liga title race, the title is expected to go to Barcelona, with Madrid trailing the leaders by four points with five games remaining, and the momentum seeming to have drained from their campaign.

Despite being under contract until 2026, Ancelotti has faced ongoing speculation about his future throughout the season, with particular noise surrounding a possible move to coach the Brazil national team. According to sources, discussions between Ancelotti’s representatives and the Brazilian Football Confederation have recently gained fresh traction.

While an official decision has yet to be made, a club insider told ESPN that the expected outcome of Ancelotti’s upcoming meeting with Perez is a mutual agreement to part ways after Madrid’s final league match against Real Sociedad.

When pressed on his future following the Copa del Rey final loss, Ancelotti was reticent. The 64-year-old tactician has consistently insisted that all discussions regarding his role would be postponed until the season’s conclusion.

“Whether I continue [at Madrid] is an issue for the coming weeks, not for today,” he told reporters.

“We’re still competing for trophies. I don’t want to talk about my future. We’ll talk about it with the club at the end of the season. I’ve always had a great relationship with the club. There’ll be no confrontation.”
