Slot has only made two signings since he joined Liverpool, meaning that the title-winning squad was assembled in Klopp’s vision
New Liverpool boss Arne Slot sang a song at Anfield to honour the man whose squad, essentially, he had led to a Premier League title win in his first season.
Liverpool welcomed Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on Sunday, and then after a 5-1 demolition, secured their 20th league title with four matches to spare. Slot, beaming with pride amid the sea of red, took a moment on the pitch during the celebrations to publicly acknowledge his predecessor.
“I send my appreciation to Jurgen,” he said, before breaking into a chant of Klopp’s name to the tune of Opus’ 1984 track “Live Is Life.”
The Anfield faithful immediately picked up the song and it echoed throughout the stadium, before Slot was interrupted with champagne.
The Dutchman has only made two signings since he joined Liverpool: Federico Chiesa and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, both of whom have barely featured for the Reds. The squad that has just won the title was assembled and shaped through Klopp’s vision.
Slot later praised the team’s mentality, saying that they had an unshakeable mindset he was proud of.
“It was clear we couldn’t lose this game. Everyone on the bus said, ‘There’s no way we’re going to lose this game,’” said Slot.
“They always find a way to win. [I’m] incredibly proud, not only of the players but the people standing here, sport directors, my staff members. We should give them a big round of applause.
“Let’s forget it’s the second [title] in 35 years, it’s the second in five years!”
