Inter Milan host Napoli in a huge Serie A clash on Saturday as the champions look to maintain their perfect start while Napoli seek a response after losing to Como.

Inter Milan and Napoli meet at San Siro on Saturday in the first heavyweight Serie A clash of the season, with both sides already facing an important test of their title credentials. The match pits the reigning champions against the team that won the Scudetto in 2025. Inter have made the perfect start with victories over Monza and Cagliari, while Napoli have won one and lost one.

Inter Have Started Like Champions

Cristian Chivu could hardly have asked for a better opening to his title defence. Inter opened the campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Monza before grinding out a 1-0 win away to Cagliari.

The results have not been perfect performances, but Inter have shown the kind of consistency that wins championships. Hakan Calhanoglu has already found the net, while Lautaro Martinez and the rest of Inter’s attacking options give Chivu plenty of firepower.

The bigger challenge now is turning their strong domestic start into a statement against one of their biggest rivals.

Napoli Need an Immediate Response

Napoli arrive in Milan with a very different mood after suffering a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Como last weekend.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side began the season with a 2-0 victory over Genoa, but the loss to Como exposed some of the problems still facing a team adjusting to life after Antonio Conte’s departure.

Napoli cannot afford another poor performance against Inter. A defeat would leave them six points behind the champions after just three matches and potentially give Inter an early advantage in the title race.

McTominay Absence Is a Huge Blow

One of Napoli’s biggest problems will be the absence of Scott McTominay. The Scotland international has been ruled out for around a month after being diagnosed with a minor heart issue that requires surgery.

McTominay was hugely influential during Napoli’s title-winning campaign and has become an important presence in midfield. His absence removes energy, physicality and goals from Allegri’s team.

Kevin De Bruyne could therefore be asked to take on greater responsibility in midfield after coming off the bench against Como and making an immediate impact.

Inter Have Selection Decisions Too

Chivu also has several decisions to make before kick-off.

John Stones and Curtis Jones both featured from the bench against Cagliari after joining Inter during the summer. Stones could now be considered for a starting role, while Piotr Zielinski is reportedly ahead of Jones for the midfield spot.

The biggest attacking dilemma could be between Marcus Thuram and Pio Esposito. Esposito has impressed during Inter’s opening matches, making it difficult for Chivu to leave the youngster out despite Thuram pushing to return to the starting XI.

Recent meetings provide some encouragement for Napoli. The Partenopei are unbeaten in their last five Serie A matches against Inter, with the previous three meetings in Milan all ending in draws.

That record shows why Inter cannot afford to take Napoli lightly, despite the contrasting starts to the campaign.

There is also plenty of history between the clubs. Inter have won 70 of the 160 Serie A meetings between the sides, while Napoli have won 48 and 42 have ended in draws.

A Major Early Test

For Inter, this is an opportunity to demonstrate that their title defence is already gathering momentum. Three wins from three would send a clear message to the rest of Serie A.

For Napoli, the objective is just as obvious: recover from the Como setback and show that one bad afternoon does not define Allegri’s team.

With both clubs also preparing for major Champions League fixtures next week, this match comes at an interesting point in their seasons. Inter travel to Real Madrid, while Napoli prepare to host Arsenal, making Saturday’s clash an important test of their depth and mentality.
