Newcastle Pile More Misery on Tottenham with 2-0 Victory

Elanga and Wissa struck as Newcastle United condemned Tottenham Hotspur to a second consecutive Premier League defeat, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a goal after two games.

Tottenham started brightly and looked determined to put last weekend’s 3-0 humiliation at Brentford behind them, but Newcastle soon reminded them that there would be no easy route to redemption.

Anthony Elanga was already causing problems inside the opening minutes, sending a dangerous cross towards the far post that Antonin Kinsky had to watch carefully.

Spurs responded through Mathys Tel, who cut inside before forcing a save from Lukas Hornicek, and the home side soon began to apply serious pressure. Pedro Porro came particularly close after Lewis Hall produced an outstanding last-gasp block to deny him, before the World Cup-winning defender sent a volley just over the bar.

Newcastle were struggling to escape their own half, but Tottenham could not find the finish they needed.

Tottenham also threatened from set pieces, with Omar Marmoush failing to make enough of Andrew Robertson’s dangerous delivery before Jan Paul van Hecke tested Hornicek from another corner.

Despite Tottenham’s pressure, neither side could find the breakthrough before half-time, leaving Newcastle thankful for their goalkeeper and Spurs frustrated by their failure to turn dominance into goals.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Tottenham continuing to push forward.

Malick Thiaw was fortunate not to concede a penalty after a reckless challenge on Marmoush, while Hall went close again with a long-range effort. Elanga also came agonisingly close to opening the scoring when he rounded Kinsky but took the ball too close to the byline to finish into the empty net.

Then, against the run of play, Newcastle finally found the moment they had been waiting for. Nico Gonzalez switched the ball brilliantly across the pitch to Amar Dedic, who found Elanga. The Swedish winger still had plenty to do, but he twisted away from former teammate Sandro Tonali before firing his finish against the post and into the net.

Tottenham tried to respond, but Newcastle now had the confidence and defensive organisation to withstand the pressure. Hornicek kept out another effort from Porro, but the visitors eventually delivered the killer blow.

Wissa produced an acrobatic finish from another corner to double Newcastle’s advantage and leave Spurs staring down the barrel of another defeat.

Marmoush had a chance to pukl one back for Tottenham late on but could not take it. The result means Spurs have now lost their opening two league matches without scoring, while Newcastle celebrated their 14th away league victory against Tottenham — more than against any other opponent.
