Tottenham Captain Admits ‘No Excuses’ After Brentford Humbling

Tottenham captain Archie Gray admits there were “no excuses” after Spurs suffered a 3-0 defeat to Brentford in their Premier League opener.

Archie Gray admitted Tottenham have no excuses to hide behind after their huge summer rebuild got off to a miserable start with a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

Gray made history at the Gtech Community Stadium by becoming Tottenham’s youngest captain in a competitive match at just 20 years and 163 days old. However, what should have been a memorable occasion quickly turned into one he will want to forget.

Tottenham arrived in west London with renewed optimism after spending close to £300 million during the summer transfer window. With Spurs having narrowly avoided another relegation battle last season, the club had invested heavily in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad in an attempt to completely change their fortunes.

Instead, Brentford exposed many of the same problems that had plagued Tottenham in previous campaigns. The Bees dominated large periods of the match and punished Spurs’ mistakes, leaving the visitors trailing 3-0 before the game was even an hour old.

“For some reason on days in football, a team can outfight another team, it’s on us, and the fans have been incredible,” Gray told reporters after the final whistle.

When asked whether fitness issues could explain Tottenham’s performance, the young captain refused to make excuses. “I don’t think there’s any excuses to be honest,” he said, accepting that Brentford simply wanted the victory more.

Gray also acknowledged that Tottenham still have plenty of work to do despite the changes made during the summer. “We’ve got work to do, you saw that performance,” he admitted. “It’s definitely an improvement from last season. It’s not the start we wanted, going into the midweek game on Wednesday.”

The defeat also overshadowed what should have been a proud personal moment for Gray. “It was an amazing moment and I’m grateful for the manager for trusting me but again, today wasn’t good enough,” he said.
